4. Humble Service

In New Testament times a disciple would wholeheartedly serve his rabbi. However Jesus insisted that He didn’t come to the world to be served, but to serve others (Mk 10:45). One of the best examples of this was during the last meal Jesus shared with his disciples, the night before His crucifixion (Jn 13:1-f). Because they were in a rented room, there was no host to serve them. You could imagine the disciples looking awkwardly at each other at the table and thinking to themselves, “Who is going to serve us…I’m not going to serve the others! No way!”

Quietly Jesus got up from where He was sitting and acted like a common slave by humbly washing His disciples travel-soiled feet before the meal. During that simple act of humble service, Jesus exposed His disciples pride and the shallowness of their view of leadership and greatness. Jesus also set an example for His disciples and the Church to follow.

What humble act of service does God want me to engage in?

What obstacles do I need to overcome so I am free to serve others?
